If you haven't been to Yanner Park recently, plan to make a visit - fall is one of the best times. Up Town Hill Road, on the right as you're driving uphill. You'll find it. A picnic area next to the parking lot on Town Hill Road is a great place to enjoy a quiet lunch or an early dinner with a sunset view. Several miles of easy to moderate, well-marked hiking trails take in a variety of forest types, from young early successional habitat to northern hardwoods to shady hemlock groves. The trails connect with the Clam River trails to make a complete Sandisfield loop. Cultural resources from the 1800's, such as stone walls and a stone arch bridge, give a nod to our town's past agricultural heritage, while a spectacular eastern view is available along the ridgeline for those willing to walk a short distance uphill. The park has been maintained and managed by Town volunteers, collectively known as the Yanner Park Committee, over the last 8 years. The Committee is looking forward to future projects and hopes to expand its numbers in order to gain an influx of new ideas and perspectives. Are you interested in hiking, recreation, forest management, or bird watching? Do you have kids and want a place nearby to get them outdoors and connected to nature? Do you have a unique skill you are willing to share? If so, please consider joining the Yanner Park Committee. Contact Janey Beardsley or Aimee Brzoska in the Town Manager's office to determine the process for being appointed and the length of term. |
