On December 16, 1934, five young men, members of the 196 Company, Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) at Sandisfield State Forest, were killed in a truck accident on Three Mile Hill while driving in to church services in Great Barrington. A memorial stone inscribed with their names stands today in the state forest. On this 91st anniversary of that event, historian and CCC re-enactor Kevin Titus, DCR staff, friends, and neighbors will honor the memory of these men, and the service of the CCC in the creation of our State Forests and Parks. Participate in a solemn ceremony at the memorial stone. View artifacts from the CCC program and talk more with resource experts about the legacy of this Great Depression New Deal Program. The 45-minute ceremony is at the site of the former CCC camp, on Route 183 in New Marlborough, just south of the intersection of East Hill/York Lake Road. Please park carefully along the roadside and walk into the camp site. The ceremony is held weather permitting. Dress for the weather conditions. Recommended for ages 13 and up. For more information or updates call (413) 426-7890. |
