Events at the Library this month.

Thursday, August 28th at 6:00pm, the Sandisfield Women's Book Group will meet to discuss "Calamity of Souls" by David Baldacci. A prolific writer, noted for his many best-sellers, this is set in the south in 1968. A racially charged murder case sets a duo of white and Black lawyers against a deeply unfair system as they work to defend their wrongfully accused Black defendants in this drama. Stacy Abrams says "A tale of high tension, false assumptions, and stubborn humanity, where the law is a crucible for who we imagine ourselves to be and how much effort still lies ahead." All month long - It is never too late to participate in the Massachusetts Center for the Book 2025 Reading Challenge. August's book is one where the protagonist is a teenager or senior citizen. Stop by the Library for a postcard of each month's reading challenge and, of course, to search for the right book.

The food pantry will be open to all during regular library hours. Together, we can provide a helping for those in need.

Latest additions to the library shelves

THE SINNERS ALL BOW (NONFICTION) BY KATE WINKLER DAWSON. A non-fiction about two authors, one murder, and the real Hester Prynne. I read the book, intrigued by "the real Hester Prynne" aspect. Having grown up in Massachusetts, and of a "certain age" Nathanial Hawthorne's "A Scarlet Letter" was required reading. I expected to be mildly entertained but found the book fascinating and as in any good murder mystery, keeping me turning the pages to find our "Who was the murderer?"

THE DARK HOURS BY AMY JORDAN (FICTION) It's happening again. Only this time, the stakes are even higher. Julia must return to Cork to face a vicious killer and the memories that haunt her. Yet Julia is no longer a naive junior officer but a seasoned, tough professional who more than a match for any murderer...

WAYWARD GIRLS BY SUSAN WIGGS (FICTION). Jodie Picoult, #1 NYT bestselling author says "Wayward Girls is all about the power of female bonds. Yet reading it, I was reminded that it hasn't been all that long since women had no rights to contraception, sex education, or reproductive rights...and how we seem to be reverting back to a world like that. This isn't a moment in time -it's a cautionary tale."

DON'T FORGET ME, LITTLE BESSIE BY JAMES LEE BURKE (FICTION) - The latest chapter in the saga of the Holland family focuses on a most unlikely member: Hackberry Holland's daughter, Bessie Mae, a child born with the 20th century. Bessie has a haunt. She sees spirits and sees herself as indissolubly connected to a little girl who was murdered years ago and whose stolen life she's determined to lead. A special treat for all the readers who've longed to see Burke place one of his strong women at the center of a story.

THE WHITE CROW BY MICHAEL ROBATHAM (FICTION) The ambitious young London police office Philomena McCarthy returns in this thriller by the author of "When You were Mine". According to Stephan King "No one does suspense better."

DEMOCRACY AWAKENING Notes on the State of America BY HEATHER COX RICHARDSON (NONFICTION). Ken Burns says "No one understands the warp and woof of the complicated tapestry that is the United States, no one apprehends the disparate forces that have directed the tides of American politics, no one forges the connections between then and now better than Heather Cox Richardson does. The result is a cogent, challenging, thoughtful, riveting and Beautiful narrative. Bravo"
